3 Highly Underrated Romantasy Books I Read In 2025

Let’s be honest: 2025 has been an absolutely overwhelming year for romantasy. The hype machine on social media is louder than ever, and my TBR pile is currently acting as a structural load-bearing element in my living room.

It feels like everyone is reading the same five mega-series right now. And don’t get me wrong, I love a good blockbuster read as much as the next person. But sometimes, the noise gets too much. I start craving something… different. Something that hasn’t been dissected a million times on my feed.

This year, I made a conscious effort to dig a little deeper into the Kindle Unlimited catalogs and the back shelves of my indie bookstore. I have been looking to find hidden gems that aren’t getting the massive marketing push. I wanted fresh magic systems, swoon-worthy romances that didn’t feel formulaic, and worlds I hadn’t already seen fan art of before.

Here are three criminally underrated romantasy books I read in 2025 that deserve way more attention.

1. Unbound by Penelope Bloom (Rated: 6 Stars!)

Unbound plunges readers into a brutal, high-stakes world where magic, power, and survival collide. Nineteen-year-old Nessa Thorne volunteers for the Empire’s annual Selection. She is expecting a quick death, but instead she’s swept into Confluence Academy. This academy is an elite institution where students are trained to harness elemental magic and forge deadly bonds with powerful beasts.

The Story:

At the Academy, each student is branded with an elemental affinity, water, air, earth, or fire. They are then taught to become one of the Empire’s most lethal weapons. But Nessa’s mark is different. It is a silver spiral, the symbol of an Unbound. Unbound are a type of being believed extinct for centuries because of how powerful they were.

Thrown into this bloody crucible, Nessa must navigate a world where trust is rare, alliances are forged in battle, and failure often means death. Her greatest threat, and most impossible temptation, comes in the form of Raith Hollow. Raith is a powerful fire-affinity student whose scorching gaze follows her every move. His secrets could unravel entire kingdoms. Nessa grapples with her tragic past, her volatile new abilities, and the forbidden flames of desire.

Why It’s Underrated:

Though Unbound delivers a rich blend of magic, monsters, and romance, it hasn’t yet gained the widespread recognition it deserves. It is often overshadowed by other magical academy/romantasy hits. Some of this comes from comparison traps where readers unfamiliar with it may dismiss it as “just another academy fantasy”. They are not appreciating the depth of worldbuilding, the emotional complexity of Nessa and Raith’s relationship, and the unique twist on elemental magic.

The Tropes:

  • Dark Academia
  • Deadly Trials
  • Enemies To Lovers
  • Elemental Magic

2. Conform by Ariel Sullivan (Rated: 5 Stars!)

If you’ve been missing the darker, dystopian feel of early 2010s YA. this book is for you! Conform is the book you slept on this year. This is atmospheric, tense, and features one of the best slow burns I’ve read in ages.

The Story:

Emeline is twenty-seven and has lived her whole life as an outcast. She is marked by a minor genetic “defect” that consigns her to the margins of society. Her days are spent in the underground Archives. She destroys relics of the old world, ancient paintings and artifacts, at the behest of the authoritarian rulers known as the Illum. In this world, history itself has been erased, and human worth is measured by conformity and genetic “fitness.”

But everything changes when Emeline is suddenly chosen as a Mate by Collin. He is one of the youngest members of the Illum. The Illum is a selection that hasn’t happened in decades where Emeline is thrusted into the elite social sphere she’s always dreamed of but never believed she deserved. The Courting ceremony she enters is glamorous, sinister, and dangerous: one misstep could lead to her elimination.

Emeline must negotiate complex feelings for Collin, while confronting Hal, a man from the oppressed margins who embodies everything the Illum try to suppress. As tensions between the ruling class and a rising rebellion escalate, Emeline is forced to reckon with the real meaning of freedom, love, and autonomy

Why It’s Underrated:

Conform is often overlooked because it resists many of the conventions readers expect from dystopian fiction. The novel focuses on quiet control, psychological tension, and the slow erosion of autonomy. Its worldbuilding unfolds subtly, asking readers to piece together the rules of society through implication rather than exposition.

The Tropes:

  • Dystopian Future Society
  • Elite vs. Oppressed Class Divide
  • Morally Gray Love Interest
  • Slow Burn Romance

3. Blood and Betrayals by Rose Janette (Rated: 6 Stars!)

Blood & Betrayals is the first book in an immersive dark academia romantasy series set in the mystic halls of Avalon University. The story centers on Summer Tuatha De Daanan, a sharp-tongued, emotionally guarded young woman who enters this elite school for supernatural beings. She has no no desire for attention or deep connections. But her carefully constructed anonymity quickly crumbles.

The Story:

Avalon University is more than an academic setting, it’s a melting pot of fae, angels, vampires, and more, each student harboring their own secrets and powers. Power courses through the ancient corridors under the watchful eyes of an enigmatic headmaster. Beneath the polished surface lies a darkness that will pull Summer deeper than she ever intended.

Summer’s journey evolves from simply surviving her tenure to uncovering dangerous truths about her own identity and past, especially when bodies begin to appear, drenched in blood, and the threat becomes personal. A mysterious killer stalks the campus with cryptic warnings that challenge Summer’s resolve and morality. Amid the tension, she forges unlikely friendships and complicated romances that force her to navigate trust, betrayal, and vulnerability.

Why It’s Underrated:

Blood & Betrayals is an ambitious dark fantasy-romance. It hooks readers with a richly built magical world, intense emotional arcs, and a tapestry of relationships and secrets. Its blend of genres, length, and stylistic choices mean it doesn’t fit every reader’s taste, but that’s exactly why many fans view it as an underrated gem.

The Tropes:

  • Dark Academia – An elite, secretive university where power, ambition, and danger thrive beneath tradition and prestige
  • Magical University / Supernatural Academy – A school for fae, vampires, angels, sorcerers, and other paranormal beings
  • Hidden Identity – The heroine doesn’t fully understand who or what she is… and neither does anyone else
  • Chosen One (Slow Reveal) – Destiny, legacy, and power unfold gradually rather than all at once
