Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction who favors grim endings, while January Andrews is a bestselling romance novelist who specializes in happily ever afters. Despite being polar opposites, they find themselves living in neighboring beach houses for the next three months, both broke and suffering from severe writer's block.

To break their creative ruts, they strike a deal to swap genres for the summer: Augustus will attempt to write a happy story while January tries her hand at the next Great American Novel. Their pact involves a series of research field trips, ranging from rom-com montages to interviews with surviving members of a backwoods death cult, all under the strict condition that neither of them will fall in love.
