Henry Turner is in over his head. Thanks to his chronic procrastination, he’s trapped in a nightmare class with his least favorite professor, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. He’s just been named the captain of the hockey team, a title he never asked for and feels wholly unprepared for, and failure isn’t an option if he wants to keep his life from spiraling. His luck takes a turn for the weird when he accidentally crashes a book club and meets Halle Jacobs, a fellow junior who is as academically brilliant as Henry is struggling.

Halle’s life is a meticulously balanced deck of cards: elite grades, a job, her beloved book club, and a secret novel she’s struggling to finish. While she doesn't have the sweeping romance of her favorite fictional heroines, she has plenty of stress, and adding "private tutor for a hockey player" to her plate seems like a recipe for disaster. However, Halle is suffering from a brutal case of writer's block, and Henry, with his chaotic energy and "new experiences" mantra, might be exactly the inspiration her story needs.

They strike a deal: she’ll help him pass, and he’ll help her live a life worth writing about. It’s a simple arrangement with a clear rule book, but as the lines between tutor and muse begin to blur, Henry and Halle find themselves facing a plot twist they didn't outline. In a season of high stakes and new chapters, they’ll have to decide if following the rules is worth missing out on the kind of love that only happens in books.
