Us Dark Few by Alexis Patton | Dystopian Romance | Book Review

I have been looking for a dystopian romance that gives me similar vibes to shatter me, and so far, this is as close as it gets! It’s set in a futuristic America where all of humanity have had to evacuate below the surface of the Earth due to an atomatic war that covered the Earth with uninhabitable radiation…

Synopsis: Khalani is a Prisoner.
Takeshi is a Guard.
Both are slaves to the Underground.

Khalani Kanes has never stood on the surface of the earth. In the underground city of Apollo, faith and dreams are as absent as the sun. She longed to visit Genesis, the infamous Domed City and the final place where humanity lives aboveground. But when Khalani is given a life sentence and thrown into prison for a theft she didn’t commit, those wishes shatter into oblivion.

In Braderhelm Prison, murderers are neighbors, ruthless and cold-blooded guards live to punish, and every second is a battle to survive. She thought the danger lay in befriending criminals and avoiding Takeshi Steele, the nefarious Captain who runs her cell block. But darker traps and secrets await her within the shadows of imprisonment. Khalani’s blood will coat the walls in flaming silk before her enemies let her escape to the surface, a feat no one has successfully achieved. If the reclusive and callous Takeshi Steele won’t kill Khalani, then the merciless prisoners and her fractured mind will.

Enter Braderhelm Prison, where only the Wicked remain.

2/5 – Sweet🌶️🌶️

This is a post apocalyptic, dystopian romance. The great collapse forced what was left of humanity to build a life underground, protected from the radioactive surface.

The story starts with Kehlani, the fmc, getting thrown into prison for life, for a crime she didn’t commit. There she meets the captain of the guards, TAKESHI😍. As she figures out how to adapt to prison life, she gets close to a group of people who end up being her good friends. But as life in prison goes on, she starts unraveling secrets about Apollo (her city), and Genesis (the dome that allows the elite and wealthy to live on the surface but protected from radiation)…

This was such a fun, fast paced book! I absolutely loved the found family, and Kehlani and Winnie’s friendship🥺

I am currently yearning for a man like Takeshi. I need him. I want him. He’s the broody, tough, Captain with a hard outer layer, but for Kehlani, he slowly breaks down those layers…

Overall, LOVED THIS! I am starting book 2 today 🤭

My Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐

My Favourite Quotes:

Some quotes I highlighted:

“The truth is, it’s not the hurt you see that’s dangerous. It’s the hurt you hide that’s the real menace”

Takeshi’s body froze. “What is that on your arm?”

“Their eyes didn’t leave one another as the metal slowly slammed home. The firm barrier represented the opposite halves of their world. She was the prisoner in a house of bars, and he held the key.”

“I haven’t even tried making you beg yet.”

“I’ll find some flowers for you”

“Then slowly, like there was static electricity tricking up the side of her body, his pinky grazed hers.”
